Round Rock City Council approves cost share for zebra mussel control in Lake Travis

The Round Rock City Council approved a cost-sharing agreement Thursday night to combat zebra mussels in Lake Travis.

The $1.3 million project aims to reduce zebra mussels at the lake through a jointly owned and operated chemical treatment station designed by Walker Partners within a water treatment plant in Cedar Park.

The fast-reproducing mollusks were found in Lake Travis approximately 10 months ago, posing a threat to the Brushy Creek Regional Authority’s floating raw water intake and other downstream treatment plant facilities. Cedar Park and Leander, which have adjacent floating intakes for their own water treatment plants, also face the same risks.

Round Rock, Cedar Park and Leander are partners in the BCRUA, which provides water to the cities through a pipeline at Lake Travis.

Cedar Park will pay nearly half of the project at $663,559, while Round Rock will pay $165,905 and Leander will pay $516,922, according to the agreement.

The project is expected to be completed sometime next year.
