Heavy rain, flood risk, severe threat late week

Central Texas has until Wednesday afternoon to get ready for a major storm that is expected to bring heavy rain, flash flooding, and a chance of severe weather through the rest of the week. Tuesday still looks hot, with highs in the 90s, heat-index values at or above 100, and only spotty showers as the summer heat dome starts to break. Wednesday stays in the 90s one more day. Light rain is possible early, then the flood threat grows by evening, especially in the Hill Country.
Thursday and Friday are the main window for widespread heavy rain and flooding. Repeated rounds of showers and storms could dump intense bursts of rain. A Pacific cold front late Thursday into Friday should increase coverage. KXAN notes a rising mid- to late-week flood threat and a marginal (1 out of 5) severe risk on Thursday. The seven-day outlook shows rain chances climbing from 20% Tuesday to 40% Wednesday, then 90% Thursday and 80% Friday, with highs falling into the mid-80s and low 80s as the cooler air arrives.
