Lake Travis Fishing Report - July 20163,248 Readers ![]() Water Temp: 84 degrees The lake has finally been brought back to full pool and is holding steady. With steady water levels the bass have settled into their typical summer pattern. Lake Travis bass are notorious for suspending in deep water during the summer and this summer is no exception. When suspended like this, these fish can be difficult to catch. The best action occurs early in the morning and just before sunset when they move up to feed. The shad have hatched and there are fry everywhere, many of which are high in the water column. Being so young, these fry are not yet strong swimmers and are being targeted by bass early and late. Pick a main lake point early and late and there is a high probability you will see bass actively surface-feeding on these tiny-sized hatchlings. With the prey being so small, matching the hatch becomes very important and this is the time when the tiny grub shines. Recent trips have been yielding 30-40 fish on finesse grubs. I rig my 3 inch grubs on a 1/8 ounce jig head, cast them out toward the bank and retrieve at a slow to medium pace back to the boat. While you’ll catch great numbers doing this, quality bites are few and far between, so be sure to cover water. I’ve also been catching a few quality largemouth on top waters, baby brush hogs, and drop shots early and late but the bites are even fewer and further between.
