Water Temp: 85.0 degrees

Despite record heat and higher than normal boat traffic and angling pressure, Lake Travis is still fishing really good.  Early limits of keepers have been a regular occurrence for me and my clients.  In the mornings, most marinas have schooling bass on them.  Top water, small swimbaits, and weightless flukes have all been successful.  Long and accurate casts are critical to increasing your catch.

There are also some striper that are mixed in with these bass, although they have been deeper.  4-5 inch flutter spoons have been my go-to for these fish.  You do need good electronics to do this.  After seeing what depth they are holding, I will drop my spoon down to them and repeatedly snap it up and let it fall back down on slack line.  Almost all your bites will come as your spoon is falling, so you need to pay attention to your line.  I have also been catching a few largemouth this way but the largemouth spoon bite has been hit or miss.

After the sun gets high and the schooling bite has died, I target main lake structure in the 20-50’ depth range.  Main lake points, humps, and saddles have been producing best.  Not all points and humps are producing, so you have to move around a lot to find one that has active fish on it.  My electronics have been invaluable in finding these fish.  If you want to get a lot of bites, Ned rigs, shaky head worms, and drop shots worked along the bottom have been best.  If you want to target a big fish, work a 10 inch worm or heavy jig slowly on the bottom in the same areas. You won’t get a lot of bites doing this but the ones you do get will be better than average quality.

Due to the COVID pandemic, my availability for the rest of July and August is good and I am still accepting bookings.
