Lake Travis Fishing Report - September 2018

4lb Lake Travis largemouth caught last week!
Water Level: 655.71

Water Temp: 83.5 degrees

Recent rains in the watershed have raised the lake level over a foot and has cooled the surface temperatures down to below 84 degrees.  The cooler weather and precipitation has made for much better fishing on Lake Travis.  While we are still a few more weeks away from our typical fall patterns, there are a few fish that are starting to head to the banks.  The shallow water pattern will only get better as the water temps continue to drop.

Early transition Fall bass fishing can be tricky at times.  This is why I have a myriad of lures rigged and ready to throw.  Early in the morning, I usually start with a top water and cast close to the bank and retrieve parallel to the bank.  As the sun gets high, I will rotate through square bill and medium-diving crankbaits, swimbaits, and spinnerbaits.  If a horizontal moving presentation doesn’t produce I will switch to more subtle presentation like a weightless fluke, Senko, or a shaky head finesse worm.

The water on Lake Travis is as clear as I’ve ever seen it.  Some of the increased clarity is due to the recent infestation of zebra mussels in the lake but it’s also due to the lack of rain, which produces runoff.  When the fishing is tough and you have ultra-clear water conditions, be sure to downsize your baits and your line.  I like to go with 6 or 8lb fluorocarbon on my spinning reels and 4-6 inch finesse baits in natural colors.

If the shallow bite isn’t producing for you, there are always bass hanging around docks and marinas on Lake Travis.  A weightless fluke or Senko skipped under shady boat slips will always produce a few bites.  Getting those fish out of the zebra mussel-infested angle iron and cables without breaking off is another story!
