As winter settles over Lake Travis, local authorities are emphasizing the importance of boating safety during colder months. Recent cold fronts have dropped water temperatures to below 50°F, significantly increasing the risk of hypothermia for anyone who falls overboard.

The Lake Travis Fire Department is urging all boaters to wear properly fitted life jackets, check weather forecasts, and ensure boats are equipped with emergency supplies like blankets and flares. To help educate the community, a free boating safety workshop is scheduled for January 15 at the Lakeway Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will cover cold-water survival techniques, proper equipment checks, and navigation tips for low-visibility conditions.

Local marinas are also offering free vessel inspections through January 31 to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Stay safe on the water this winter by planning ahead and being prepared for sudden weather changes.
