Modern guesthouse tower adds space, views to lakeside cabin

The master retreat-makers at Andersson Wise Architects are at it again. After building such dream getaways as this modern Montana cabin and the lake home with cordwood walls, the Austin-based firm has added an exquisite sleeping tower to the site of a vacation home overlooking Austin’s Lake Travis. Tower House was originally conceived as an addition to the owners’ 1930s summer home, but the architects opted for an alternative.

“Our clients came to us with the request to expand the cabin with an additional two bedrooms with baths and larger living area for larger groups to gather in,” Andersson-Wise told Dezeen. “Rather than add onto the old cabin, we chose instead to open it up inside and site the new bedroom quarters remotely on the site.”

The silvery three-story tower is clad in stained massaranduba wood and contains a small foyer, staircase, two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, and a covered roof deck with a wet bar and expansive views of the lake below. The interior is paneled with light birch plywood and naturally ventilated by the arrangement of the large corner window and open stairway.

Outside, a limestone-covered terrace connects the original cabin to the sleeping quarters.
