Graveyard Point residents brace for flooding

Residents in the Graveyard Point area of western Travis County are preparing for the worst as Lake Travis waters rise and floodgates upstream open.

Terry Ross has lived in his cabin at the end of Graveyard Point Road along the banks of the Colorado River since 1945 and said that Tuesday’s flooding is still not as bad as what he saw in 1957. His son-in-law and a friend were moving Ross and his belongings to wait out the expected flooding at a relative’s home in Dripping Springs.

“If it floods us again, this will be the tenth one we’ve been through,” Ross said.

On Tuesday morning, pickups and other large vehicles lined the narrow roads, some unpaved, waiting to take residents and what they can take from their homes to higher ground.

“It’s coming,” Ross said. “They’re supposed to open Mansfield (Dam) at 12. It means it’s coming down big time for them to open up the gate because this is a holding tank. We’ll probably get flooded again.”
