Hike and bike trail on Lady Bird Lake closed due to rising water

Barton Springs Pool and the Barton Creek greenbelt in Austin are closed until further notice due to dangerous weather conditions, city parks officials said Tuesday.

Officials said water levels in the creek are expected to greatly increase throughout the day, posing safety hazards to anyone visiting the trails that run southwest from Zilker Park. Erosion and muddy conditions are also a concern, officials said.

″(The Parks and Recreation Department) strongly encourages park patrons to not access the greenbelt during the closure,” officials said. “Please obey signage and do not go on closed trails.”

Parks officials said they will continue to evaluate conditions and will announce when the greenbelt will be reopened.

The city has also closed the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike trail along Lady Bird Lake, as the Lower Colorado River Authority planned to open floodgates on the Highland Lakes, which will cause water to rise several feet on Tuesday, officials said.

With the closure of Barton Springs Pool, the city was preparing Deep Eddy Pool to accommodate any early-morning swimmers displaced by the closure, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department said in a statement Tuesday.
