Travis County deputies are expecting large crowds at the lakes over the 4th of July weekend, which is why they are reminding everyone to be mindful when they're out on the water.

With a sunny weekend forecast, boaters are already making Fourth of July plans.

“We’re just going to hang out. I’ll probably come out on the lake, maybe tube and wakeboard a little bit,” said student Brent Aarons.

Sheriff’s deputies say the conditions are magnets for large crowd but they warn of the danger beneath the surface. There are large pieces of debris which can sometimes go unnoticed.

“If you can imagine being a skier and hitting them at 25-30 mph,” said Sgt. Michael Stroh.

When they can, deputies tow those pieces to shore. Additionally, deputies will be keeping a close eye on boaters, their priority: boating safety.

“If you’re operating a boat, you’re responsible for everyone in the boat--to make sure everyone has a life jacket,” said Stroh.

Most citations are issued for not having enough life jackets on board. Law enforcement agencies will be out on the lake, reminding residents that boating while intoxicated will not be tolerated—those suspected of being impaired will be arrested.

"Limit the amount of alcohol, stay hydrated. If you're not a very good swimmer make sure you have a life jacket,” said Stroh.

A person arrested for boating while intoxicated may face up to 180 days in prison, and a $2,000 fine and a possible driver’s license suspension.
