A partnership of public and private groups are funding a $120,000 to $150,000 study on the economic impact of Lake Travis.

The report will quantify the lake's value as an economic engine in terms of jobs, tax dollars, property values and other indicators. In addition to hospitality, retail and restaurant businesses, money is also brought in through tourism, such as boating, fishing and scuba diving, which can all be affected by the cleanliness of the water.

“The results of this first-of-its-kind study about Lake Travis can be essential to many different entities in making balanced decisions related to water quality and water availability," Travis County Commissioner Karen Huber said.

The highland lakes, including Lake Travis, were initially created for flood control and as water reservoirs, but over time growth and development nearby have spurred a vibrant economy, the county said in a press release. The project does not have a specific policy goal, according to a Travis County official, but will help developers, government leaders and others set priorities.

The partners — which include the county, Water Control and Improvement District, chamber and others —is still in the process of choosing a company to conduct the study. Of the total cost, Travis County Commissioners approved throwing in about $20,000.
