Five members of troop become Eagle Scouts

These students have earned the Eagle Scout ranking, the highest level of recognition in the Boy Scouts:

Mason Slade, son of Duane and Jennifer Slade of Lakeway, coordinated an effort to send 5,000 pairs of Croc shoes to the island of Kosrae in Micronesia. For many on the island of about 8,000 people, this is their only pair of shoes. Mason is a freshman at Lake Travis High School.

David Germann, son of Chris and Leigh Germann of West Lake Hills, built a walkway and bridge and cleared trails at the Nature Conservancy in Bee Cave. He is a graduate of Westlake High School and is serving a two-year mission in Toronto. He will return in August 2012.

Sam Hazen, son of Vince and Connie Hazen of West Lake Hills, built a new entrance and coordinated cleanup efforts at the Eanes Community Cemetery on the Eanes Elementary School campus. Hazen is a freshman at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Will Finlayson, son of Richard and Kristen Finlayson of Lakeway, extensively landscaped an area near the Lake Travis High School tennis courts. He created an entrance and seating areas with picnic tables for spectators. He is a freshman at Brigham Young University.

Austin Finch, son of Ted and Carmen Finch of West Lake Hills, cleared trails in the Senna Hills area of West Austin. He cut down brush and trees, mulched the clippings and spread mulch along the greenbelt behind Senna Hills to make it more accessible to residents. He is a freshman at Brigham Young University.

All five Eagle Scouts are from Troop 550, chartered by the Barton Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Judge receives national award

Sam Sparks, the U.S. district judge in Austin, became the second recipient of the Sandra Day O'Connor Jurist Award. The honor, which was presented by the American College of Trial Lawyers and was established in 2007, is given to a federal or state judge who has demonstrated exemplary judicial independence in the performance of his or her duties, sometimes in difficult or even dangerous circumstances.
