Recent rainfall has significantly boosted water levels in Central Texas' Highland Lakes. Lake Buchanan is now 100% full at 1,019.88 feet mean sea level, up about 20 feet from last year, while Lake Travis sits at 82% full at 669.91 feet, up roughly 33 feet over the same period. According to the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), rains in April and May have improved drought conditions across the region, increasing soil moisture, reducing fire danger, and enhancing overall water supplies compared to a year ago.
LCRA expects relatively low rainfall in the coming days with minimal additional impact on lake levels, though hydrologists are monitoring inflows and potential floodgate operations if heavier rain hits the Upper Basin. Locals like Robert Weiss of Lake Travis Scuba appreciate the higher water for better diving depths but note temporary visibility issues from murky runoff and the need for dock adjustments and shoreline caution due to rising levels. Residents are advised to sign up for LCRA flood notifications and practice water safety.
