Major Texas reservoirs increase in lake storage

After major flooding in July, several key Texas reservoirs have seen dramatic rebounds in water storage, providing welcome relief for water managers. Lake Travis, one of the two primary water-supply reservoirs in the Highland Lakes system managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), is now at approximately 100% capacity—about 10% higher than at the same time last year. Canyon Lake north of San Antonio has also reached 100% full, an increase of nearly 32% from a year ago, while Lake Corpus Christi has risen by roughly 18%. LCRA executive vice president for water John Hoffman noted that significant rainfall in July for a second consecutive year is unusual, as the month is typically among the drier periods.

These gains benefit the millions of Texans who rely on reservoir storage, yet officials caution that levels will begin to decline gradually without additional rain. Hoffman stressed the ongoing importance of conservation, particularly outdoor landscape watering, urging residents to remain mindful of water use throughout the year even after the recent replenishment.
