Champion boys claim regional golf title

The Boerne Champion boys golf team will be making its second straight trip to the 4A state golf tournament after they won the Region IV-4A title last week at the Pecan Valley golf course in San Antonio.

Champion really won it on the first day after they came in leading the field with a 296, three strokes ahead of Lake Travis. On the second day, played in a light mist near the end, the Chargers and Cavaliers tied with 307s.

The three-stroke advantage the Chargers had after the first day held up as they finished with a 603 and Lake Travis scored a 606. Lake Travis No. 2 came in third with a 620 and shot a 301 on the first day and a 327 on Day 2.

Champion won the team title despite not having anybody in the top five, but there were three Chargers in the top 10.

Zach Reichenau led Champion with a 75 and 71 for a 146, which earned him sixth place. Cody Bly tied for seventh with a 150 after shooting a 74 and 76. Scott Tredo turned in a score of 152 with rounds of 73 and 79, while Kyle Dziedziula shot a 155 after he recorded a 74 and 81. Tabor Brooks didn’t have a score on the first day after he signed an incorrect scorecard. He shot a 91 on Day 2.

Chargers coach Bill Toland said it was a great performance by his team at a very tough course.

“We felt like Pecan Valley, with its length and difficulty, was the perfect place for us to win a regional tournament,” Toland said. “Zach’s performance on the second day drove our team into the championship because our guys knew he was going to post a low score after turning the front nine at two-under par. That pumped us up enough to fight through the back nine.

“Nobody really knew which team had won until all the scores were posted, that’s how close this thing really was. Kyle's steady play was the difference,” Toland added. “He came into this event knowing he’d have to play well for us to advance and he was able to do that. Scott and Cody fired low rounds on the first day and that got us the lead.”

Reichenau said he was looking forward to playing at Pecan Valley.

“I always wanted to play well here because my dad grew up playing Pecan Valley and I heard all the stories of him shooting 66 and 67, so I’m happy I could play well and help the team,” he said.

The 4A boys state golf tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday, May 10-11.
