LCRA to reopen Lake Travis for public use Wednesday

Lake Travis will be reopened to the public on Wednesday at 8 a.m., the Lower Colorado River Authority announced Tuesday.

However, two lakes farther upstream — Lakes LBJ and Marble Falls — will remain closed until at least Friday “because of debris and unsafe conditions caused by the recent flooding,” the LCRA said in a statement. The agency said it would re-evaluate conditions at the end of the week.

Property owners will be allowed on the closed lakes to recover or secure flood-damaged property, the LCRA said. Officials are warning property owners who go in the water to be aware of submerged hazards, especially at night.

Lake Buchanan and Inks Lake are already open.

Meanwhile, one floodgate remains open at Mansfield Dam, which forms Lake Travis, and at Tom Miller Dam, which forms Lake Austin. The LCRA said Tuesday it expects to close the floodgates on Wednesday.

Lake Austin, along with Lady Bird Lake and portions of the Colorado River within Austin’s city limits, will remain closed to commercial and recreational boaters and swimmers through Friday, by order of the Austin Fire Department. The department says dangerously swift water flow and debris continue to pose a hazard.
