Canyon Lake weathering drought with little problem

The ongoing drought has been devastating Central Texas bodies of Lake Travis for years now, but one lake has weathered the dry conditions relatively well.

Outside of New Braunfels, Canyon Lake is down just about 10 feet from its normal level. Some boat ramps are closed, but many are still open for recreational use.

"Canyon Lake has traditionally been one of the most resilient lakes in Texas water-wise, and we're seeing that to be true,” Mike Dussere with the Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County said.

Even with the lower level, supervisors of the lake say they haven’t heard any incidents of boats hitting any obstructions beneath the water.

"Canyon Lake is an awesome lake. It's 125 feet deep. We've got 80 miles of shoreline, over eight surface-acres of water.” Dussere said. “There's just a lot of people coming out and enjoying it."

The extended holiday weekend and lower levels at nearby lakes have sent more people to dock at this reservoir.

"We've got marinas, we've got campgrounds, swim beaches, you name it as far as lake recreation goes and it's out there," Dussere said.

Good news for the thousands of people expected to hit the lake this weekend.

"It's July in Texas and it's awfully hot so people are better and happier in the water than out of the water,” Dussere

The Army Corps of Engineers operates Canyon Lake.
