The Champion boys golf team is headed back to the Class 4A UIL state tournament, while doubles teams at both Boerne High School and Champion will be competing for state gold at their respective meets.
Boerne Champion junior golfer Scott Tredo set the Pecan Valley Golf Course on fire last week at the Class 4A, Region IV Tournament with sizzling back-to-back rounds of 67, and the Chargers held off Alamo Heights in a sudden death playoff to earn a third straight trip to Austin.
The Chargers had won the previous two regional tournaments, but this time Lake Travis ran away with the team competition.
Two teams advance to state, and the Chargers found themselves involved in a sudden-death playoff with Alamo Heights when the two traditional rivals tied after 36 holes.
Champion won the event on the second playoff hole after an official penalized Heights two strokes when a Mules player offered advice to a teammate while the ball was in play.
Tredo needed no last minute dramatics to win first medalist, outdistancing second-place Klein Klotz of Lake Travis by eight strokes.
The Class 4A state golf championships are scheduled for May 9-10 at the Jimmy Clay Course in Austin.
The Geneva School of Boerne girls' varsity golf team successfully defended its TAPPS 1A state golf title at Waco last week and golfer Evan Kasprowicz, Geneva's only male representative at the tournament, earned second medalist with a two-day total 167.
Haylee Hawkins paced the Lady Eagles with a two-day total 214 that was good for second place overall. Abby Leeder took third medalist with a score of 215.
Boerne High School doubles partners and sisters Katarina and Tatiana Bujnoch won the Class 3A, Region 4 girls doubles competition at Corpus Christi last week to advance to state.
“Katarina and Tatiana played a great regional tournament,” BHS tennis coach Glenn Miller said.
“Kat and Tee placed third in the region last year, and since that day the girls have focused on making the next step, which was to win the championship.”
Champion High School will also be sending a girls doubles team to the Class 4A, UIL championships after defending state bronze medalists Paige Murdoch and Briana Fellows finished second at regionals.
But 2010 boys state doubles champions Mark Gorham and Jared Fellows lost a bid to defend their title when they lost both their finals match and a playback match that would have sent them to Austin.
“We picked a bad day to not play our best,” Cantu said of his entire team's performance. “We had opportunities to get several out but could not convert on those opportunities.”
The Boerne Greyhound baseball team clinched its second straight District 26-3A championship last Friday with a 4-0 win at second-place Fredericksburg. Mason Salata pitched the shutout, and the Hounds backed him with solid defense and timely hitting.
“Mason pitched very well,” Boerne High School baseball coach Bill Merrell said. “All the guys played really well—key hits when we needed them, big-time defensive plays when we needed them. We ended the game with a 5-4-3 double play.”
Boerne clinched the title earlier in the week with a 9-7, extra-inning victory at Wimberley. Dalton D'Spain was only a triple short of hitting for the cycle, bringing home five runs.
The Hounds wrap up district play tomorrow night at home against Canyon Lake.
The Boerne Champion Charger baseball team can win the undisputed District 28-4A title tomorrow night at home by completing a season sweep of Uvalde.
A loss would probably lead to a tie with Medina Valley that would require a play-in game. Champion is already assured of a share of the title.
Champion pitcher Luke Strieber moved the Chargers within one win of the championship with a complete game, seven-inning no-hitter in last Friday's 4-0 win at Kerrville Tivy. Shortstop Blake Allemand doubled and tripled, driving in two runs.
The Champion softball team secured the fourth and final playoff seed in District 28-4A with its 8-4 victory at Kerrville last Friday. Champion finished 5-7 in district and Tivy fell to 4-8.
Champion will meet District 27-4A champion Smithson Valley in the first round of the playoffs.
The Geneva School of Boerne wrapped up its first varsity baseball campaign with an overall record of 11-4 and a district record of 8-4.
The young eagles concluded the season with an 18-6 victory over Schertz John Paul II and a 7-5 win over Victoria Faith.
