First-Timer’s Day Trip to Lake Travis from Austin

Lake Travis shoreline with limestone cliffs, a boat dock and boats on the water

Lake Travis is the big Hill Country lake just northwest of Austin. If it’s your first time out, a little planning goes a long way: check the level, pick one way to get on the water, and leave room for lunch with a view.

1. Check the lake before you leave

Lake Travis rises and falls a lot. Full pool is 681 feet above sea level, and the shoreline, beaches, coves and ramps all look different depending on where the level sits. Start with today’s water level, then look at the live webcam for the weather and how busy the water looks. In summer, also check the forecast for heat and afternoon storms.

2. Plan the drive

Depending on traffic and which part of the lake you’re headed to, plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes from downtown Austin. The lake is long and winding, so marinas, parks and restaurants on opposite shores can be a long drive apart even when they look close on a map. Pick one area for the day and use the Lake Depth Map to see what’s nearby.

Summer weekends are the busiest time on the lake. Arriving in the morning makes parking, launching and finding a quiet spot much easier.

3. Pick how you’ll get on the water

  • Rent a boat. Pontoons are the easy first-timer choice: stable, roomy and simple to drive. Many Lake Travis boat rentals also offer jet skis, wakeboard boats or a captain, so you can relax while someone else drives.
  • Go to a park. Travis County runs several lakeside parks, such as Pace Bend Park and Mansfield Dam Park, with swimming, picnicking and boat launch access. Parks charge day-use fees and post alerts and closures, so check Travis County Parks before you go.
  • Bring your own boat. Use the boat ramps page and the map to find a ramp that works at today’s level, or look at marinas for fuel, slips and supplies.

The lake is close to full, a good level for most of the shoreline. Ramps still vary, so check the one you plan to use. Each public ramp has its own lowest usable elevation, and marinas can move docks or limit services when the level drops.

4. Know the basic boating rules

Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPWD) sets the rules on the water. The ones first-timers most often ask about:

  • Boater education: if you were born on or after September 1, 1993, you need a boater education course to drive a personal watercraft (jet ski), a motorboat over 15 horsepower or a sailboat over 14 feet, unless a qualified adult (18+) is on board. Rental companies will tell you what they require.
  • Life jackets: every boat needs a wearable, USCG-approved life jacket for each person on board. Children under 13 must wear one on boats under 26 feet while the boat is underway.
  • No boating while intoxicated: the same 0.08 BAC limit applies on the water as on the road. Have a sober driver.

See TPWD boater education for the full rules.

5. Lunch with a view

Many Lake Travis restaurants sit right on the water or high above it, and a few can be reached by boat. Ask about wait times on summer weekends and check hours before you go, as some places change them by season and weather.

Packing list: sunscreen, hats, plenty of water, a cooler with snacks, towels, water shoes for rocky shoreline, and a dry bag for phones and keys.
