It was a softball game for the scorebooks

The district softball game began at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and ended 15 minutes before midnight. The final: Connally 1, Anderson 0.

Connally pitcher Nicole Pierce, who threw 215 pitches, went the distance in the 16-inning District 25-5A matchup. She struck out 21. Anderson pitcher Katie Slaughter, Central Texas' season leader in strikeouts, also pitched the entire game, fanning 14.

In the 16th inning, Connally's Kara Babola scored the game-winning run on a hit by Kris Parr.

"There was all kinds of drama," Connally assistant coach Christi Dreier said. "It was a great game to watch, minus the four hours of craziness."

Cavaliers golfers sweep district titles

Lake Travis swept through the District 25-4A golf championships, winning team and individual honors in both the boys and girls tournaments.

The Lake Travis girls finished with a total of 922, well ahead of second-place Hendrickson, which shot 1,089. The top individual girls for the Cavaliers were Chelsea Bretcher (80-75-71—226) and Lexie Hall (85-69-74—228).

The Cavalier boys finished at an even-par 900, beating the school's second team by 25 shots. Tayler Termeer (76-69-74—219) and Klein Klotz (77-72-73—222) finished as the top two individual boys.

Hyde Park's Benson headed to Bowie

Vickie Benson, a multi-sport coach at Hyde Park Baptist for 10 years, has accepted a job as head coach of the Bowie girls basketball team. She also will be an assistant track coach. Bowie had been guided by an interim coach (Jamie Nicholson) since Lynn Pool left last summer to take a job with the Austin ISD athletic department.

Hyde Park reached the playoffs every year under Benson, including five TAPPS Final Four appearances and a state championship in 2004.

Leander's Jonathon Henderson has committed to play football for Texas A&M, becoming the fourth recruit to pledge to the Aggies for the 2011 season. As a junior, Henderson caught 45 passes for nearly 800 yards, including 10 touchdown receptions. ...

Blake Davis, a nationally ranked junior tennis player, has signed with Florida State. Davis is the No. 1 recruit in Texas, according to tennisrecruiting.net. In the fall, he reached the semifinals of the USTA National Opens in Irvine, Calif., and the quarterfinals of the USTA boys 16-to-18 national clay court championships in Delray Beach, Fla. Davis is the son of Doug Davis, head coach at the Austin Tennis Academy. ...
