A USC recruiter called the Shipley household in Brownwood earlier this week to ask about junior wide receiver Jaxon Shipley.
"We've been getting about 15 letters a week," Jaxon's father, Brownwood coach Bob Shipley, said.
Bob Shipley told the Trojans the same thing he's told everybody else: "We're flattered, but we don't want to waste your time."
Everybody found out why on Friday. Jaxon — the younger brother of former Longhorns standout Jordan Shipley — became the Longhorns' first commitment for their 2011 recruiting class.
He wasn't the last. Cedar Park linebacker Chet Moss and Lake Travis offensive lineman Taylor Doyle also pledged to the Longhorns on Friday.
"I never wanted to go anywhere else," Jaxon Shipley said. "I didn't even send my film out to anybody."
Shipley, a 6-foot, 175-pound athlete known for his route running, was the worst-kept secret when it came to committing, but that doesn't make him any less meaningful.
It just makes him the first of many expected commitments this weekend.
The Longhorns host their first Junior Day today and Sunday, when Texas coach Mack Brown will extend offers and players will make commitments.
Texas hosts its second junior day next weekend.
It's possible that Texas will finish this weekend with 10 or more players pledged to play for the Longhorns.
Around 20 junior recruits will be in Austin, and while not all those players will receive scholarship offers, many will.
One of those is El Paso El Dorado tight end M.J. McFarland, who stands 6-5, weighs 235 and has impressive athletic ability.
Given the Longhorns' struggles at tight end , McFarland is high on Texas' wish list. And he also is high on the Longhorns.
McFarland was scheduled to play in a basketball game Friday night before hopping in a car to make the trip from El Paso to Austin.
"That's how dedicated he is to his team, and that's how much he's looking forward to his visit with Texas," El Dorado coach Jim Althoff said.
Others who are expected to commit to Texas — if they're offered — include Hallsville offensive lineman Josh Cochran and Klein Oak defensive end Nathan Hughes.
It also wouldn't be shocking if Belton quarterback David Ash, Arlington receiver Miles Onyegbule, Galena Park North Shore lineman Sedrick Flowers and South Houston cornerback Leroy Scott pledge by the end of the weekend.
One question will be running backs. The Longhorns, who have been questioned about their running back recruiting over the past five seasons, are hosting two of the state's best: Cibolo Steele's Malcolm Brown and San Antonio Madison's Aaron Green.
It will be interesting to see if both are offered — and what their responses will be.
No matter what, this weekend is the beginning to the 2011 recruiting class.
In fact, it's already started.
"Mack Brown is the best coach in the country," Jaxon Shipley said. "I saw how he helped out my brother. And Bobby Kennedy is the best receivers coach in the country. He taught my brother everything about how to be a great receiver."
Shipley said he's not worried about being compared to Jordan, who finished his UT career ranked No. 1 in all-time catches (248), No. 2 in receiving yards (3,191) and No. 2 in receiving touchdowns (33).
"If I end up better than my brother, then I end up better than my brother. If I end up not being as good, them I'm not as good," Shipley said. "I'm not going to come in there comparing myself to him and feeling that pressure. I'm just going to try and be the best I can."
