The Lady Roos didn't laugh or smile or joke as they walked out of their locker room after halftime, despite their 10-point lead. They looked like a team ready for a break-out quarter.
Jasmine Baugus scored six of her 10 points in the third and Killeen outscored Lake Travis 18-7 in the period and ran to its second-straight win – 50-28 – heading into next week's game at Marble Falls.
"The third quarter, they started playing," said Killeen coach Latisha Williams.
Tameeka Randall's game-high 12 points led nine different Lady Roos' scorers, a switch, Williams added, from the recent norm.
"It's actually better because we've been having it like Baugus 20 and Tameeka and then like four," Williams said. "We'll see. We made way too many turnovers in the first half, which was causing us problems with scoring in general. In district, it can be ugly, we'll take the W."
Killeen (10-14, 2-0 25-4A) turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, but Lake Travis missed 11 layups and seven free throws. Lake Travis (9-13, 0-2) hit just six of 20 from the line while the Lady Roos hit 16 of 20, including six of six in the third.
"I felt like we kind of messed up in that first half. We missed a ton of shots and it came back to bite us in the second half, too," said Lake Travis coach Ted Dydalewicz. "We missed a tremendous amount of 1-, 2-, 5-foot shots and if they're not going to fall, we're not going to score."
After Elaine Houston cut Killeen's lead to nine with a free throw early in the second half, Baugus and Mariah Shaw each scored layups and Baugus hit a pair of free throws as the Lady Cavs missed their next five shots, including a pair of put-backs under the bucket.
Baugus' second layup with 3:25 left in the third, put Killeen up 25 and forced Dydalewicz into a timeout.
Jasmine Goodwine had six blocks, including three in the third quarter, to go along with her six points and 10 rebounds.
Brown scored four of her points in the fourth for Lake Travis, but the missed shots and missed free throws had already taken their toll, Dydalewicz said.
"Sure, they're kids. They're going to remember that first half and, I think, we came out in the second half and hit that first quick bucket there and we had a little momentum going but then we take five or six more shots that don't fall," Dydalewicz said. "Truthfully, I think it wore them down mentally. We tried to put on a couple of runs but we couldn't mount anything."
Killeen, which has now won six of its last seven games, goes to Marble Falls where it was forced to share the District 25-4A title after a 52-43 loss last season. Killeen beat the Lady Mustangs in the first meeting last year to split the season series.
"It's always hard to play there ... We have tomorrow all the way to Friday to prepare for Marble Falls," Williams said. "I'm not going to overwork them. I've noticed that rest is good for them. Rest is definitely good."
