BCS championship: worsts of the game

Worst time for an injury

Colt McCoy took a lick on his right shoulder on a clean hit by Alabama's Marcell Dareus and left for the locker room after he took just five snaps. McCoy helplessly watched from the sideline after returning to the field in uniform in the third quarter as a valiant Longhorns comeback attempt fell short.

Worst decision on a punt

Alabama's decision to call a fake punt and have P.J. Fitzgerald throw it was not your characteristic risky move by the defensive-minded Nick Saban. Texas safety Blake Gideon was more than happy to take a gift interception.

Worst call with your team already reeling

With Texas trailing by a manageable 11 points and one kneel-down from going into the locker room, offensive coordinator Greg Davis called a shovel pass to D.J. Monroe, who bobbled the pass, which was intercepted by Dareus and returned 28 yards for a touchdown.

Worst drop

The degree of difficulty was high, but Malcolm Williams failed to go up and come down with the ball in the end zone midway through the second quarter. If he catches that, Texas could cut the deficit to 14-13 at a critical juncture, but it glanced off his hands.

Worst aesthetics on punt coverage

When Alabama punted, Dre Kirkpatrick and Robby Green tripped over each other but still downed the ball at the Longhorns' 2-yard line late in the first half.

Worst assumption

That Texas was out of this game, trailing 24-6. Young Garrett Gilbert settled down and made this one a classic. After having a horrific first half, the Lake Travis High legend threw two touchdown passes, along with a two-point conversion pass in the final two quarters.

Worst imitation of a streaker

Some guy ran out on to the football field in a yellow skullcap and tights in the third quarter and had the nerve to be wearing clothes. What's the point?

Worst tackling skills

Texas cornerback Chykie Brown whiffed on at least three attempts to tackle Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. Brown appeared to not be very interested in taking on the bigger Ingram.

Worst inner clock

Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy thought he had all the time in the world in the pocket for some reason. He didn't. Longhorns defensive end Sergio Kindle took full advantage with three sacks, in what he had to be the best game of his career.

Worst brain fart

As Texas strives to catch up early in the fourth quarter with 10 minutes left, referees help Texas go 3-and-out on what could have been a game changing drive by missing two pass interference calls.  To add insult to the two missed penalties, Texas is called for pass interference and a hand in the face mask during the following drive, giving Alabama a 30 yard advantage.

Worst post-game blues

The injury to Colt McCoy is arguably unfortunate for both teams. It deprived the BCS Championship of reaching its full potential by giving Alabama an unfair advantage, robbed Texas of confidence for the remainder of the first half, but most importantly, it sullied Alabama's victory in the BCS National Championship, as it left fans wondering "what might have been" had McCoy not been injured.  At the end of the day, a true freshman quarterback grew into a fearless leader before our eyes, leaving Texas fans eager to see what the future holds for Garrett Gilbert, and Alabama walks away with a long-awaited BCS National Championship trophy.
