With Texas starting quarterback Colt McCoy suffering a shoulder injury during the Longhorns' first series of the 2010 BCS National Championship game, I thought it would be helpful to inform everyone about who exactly Garrett Gilbert is, the backup quarterback now taking snaps.
He's a true freshman—listed at 6'4", 207 pounds. A graduate of Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, Gilbert enters the BCS National Championship with a quarterback rating of 97.75 while completing 15 of 26 passes for 125 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Lake Travis is the same high school that produced Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing.
Gilbert was ranked as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback from the Class of 2009 and the No. 18 overall prospect by Rivals.com. The recruiting site also listed him as a five-star QB.
Scout.com ranked him as the No. 5 overall quarterback in the class, and a five-star recruit.
He chose the University of Texas over Nebraska, Arizona, Stanford, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and California.
