Garrett Gilbert could have picked almost any school in the country. He was selected as the All-USA offensive player of the year in 2008 and had offers from some of the best programs.
But unlike most players that look for immediate playing time, Gilbert signed with Texas last February knowing that Colt McCoy was entrenched as the starter.
Gilbert, who played for Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, saw the positive in the situation. He is playing for his hometown school and getting mentored by the quarterback with the most wins in NCAA history.
"It is hard being a backup after playing for so long in high school," Gilbert said. "But it is good to have a year to get prepared and watch the game."
Most of his knowledge has come from watching McCoy.
"I've learned so much. His leadership qualities. His patience. Staying focused. He is a great role model for young people."
While he has played in only eight games and thrown 26 passes, Gilbert also knows his number might be called against Alabama.
"I am one play away from being out there and need to be ready," Gilbert said. "I remind myself of that every week and the coaches do also."
If he doesn't see the field, he looks forward to being the man next year in Austin and using what he's learned during his apprenticeship to be a better quarterback.
