If you plan to swim on Lake Travis on Memorial Day weekend, the Lake Travis Task Force has started a new free life jacket system for all visitors.

According to Travis County officials, there were 10 fatalities in 2008 at Lake Travis.

The lake officials say they hope the new life jacket system provides safety for all visitors by providing 30 to 40 free life jackets to the public during lake hours. The free loaner program is based on a merit system.

"If we have to replace them every weekend then we will replace them," Tareka Wheeler from Safe Kids Austin said. "We really want this to be a resource and we want to prevent drowning from happening to children and adults on the lake."

The board holding the life jackets will be watched and locked up by Lake Travis officials every day. Another board with jackets will open at Bob Wentz Park at Windy Point by the middle of June.
