In this economy parents believe schools are striking out.
“We’re asked to donate items, to bring crayons, we're out of crayons, bring Kleenex because we’re out. We need more supplies for this,” said Robert Salinas, father of two.
Expectations for school leaders have been higher.
"I would like to think they’re hiring nothing but the best for whoever’s in charge of the district where my kids go to school," said Mickey Bushong, another father of two.
Becoming superintendent is in many ways like making it to the big leagues. They are the CEO of a school district. So KVUE News decided to ask parents how much they believe superintendents should make.
"What I think they should make is probably about $60,000," said Tracy Halling.
"Probably the equivalent to any other CEO level job a six figure salary -- whether that’s $100,000 or $150,000 -- sounds probably reasonable," said Will Koenig.
"I'm going to say $60,000 or $80,000," said Cynthia Ware.
"Maybe $150,000?" questioned Lana Keaster.
"I think they should make $50,000 a year -- (that) is sufficient," said Terrye Fisher.
