Each week, ESPNRISE.com senior editor Doug Huff takes a look at high school football players who may be about to surpass significant state or national records. (Based on games through Oct. 31):

Mark McDonagh
Position: Wide receiver
School: Riverside-Brookfield (Riverside, Ill.)
What: In his final high school game, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior set a single-season national record for receptions. He hauled in 12 passes in a 30-6 Class 6A playoff loss to Hubbard (Chicago, Ill.) for a 10-game season total of 165 catches.
Old Record: 153, set in 2007 by Jason Bird of Lake Travis (Austin, Texas).
Notable: Earlier in the season, McDonagh set Illinois records for catches in a game three times, with a best of 25 in a 49-7 win over Elmwood Park (Elmwood Park, Ill.).

Trevor Romaine
Position: Kicker
School: Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
What: After converting on seven PATs for the Huskies in their 52-21 victory against Santiago (Corona, Calif.) last week, Romaine pushed his career PAT total to 191.
Record: 206 career PATs is the state record. It was set in 2004 by Gio Podesto from Central Catholic.
Notable: Romaine scored points in CIF bowl games in 2007 and 2008 and has committed to Oregon State.

Kip Smith
Position: Kicker
School: Legacy (Broomfield, Colo.)
What: The 24-year-old national record for longest field goal might be in jeopardy this season. Smith opened the season by booting a 67-yarder against Mountain Range (Westminster, Colo.).
Record: 68 yards, set in 1985 by Dirk Borgonone of Reno, Nev.
Notable: Smith's 67-yarder bettered the state mark of 64 yards set in 2001. Smith, bound for Minnesota, has also kicked field goals of 52 and 51 yards this season and has converted on 10-of-12 attempts.

Zach Hocker
Position: Kicker
School: Russellville (Russellville, Ark.)
What: With 16 field goals in nine games, Hocker could threaten the single-season national record.
Record: 22 -- shared by three players, including Jimmy Stevens of Heritage Hall (Oklahoma City, Okla.).
Notable: Hocker, a senior, tied the single-season state record of 16, set in 2001 by Kyle Magrini of Greenwood (Greenwood, Ark.). Hocker can break that mark Friday night in the final regular-season game.

Michael Holmes
Position: Running back
School: Harrisonburg (Harrisonburg, Va.)
What: The junior has rushed for a school-record 2,467 yards in nine games. If he maintains his average of 274.1 yards per game through a deep playoff run, Holmes could threaten the single-season state record.
Record: 3,319 yards, set in 1994 by Thomas Jones of Powell Valley (Big Stone Gap, Va.).
Notable: Holmes rushed for 413 yards and a state-record-tying eight TDs in the first half against Lee (Staunton, Va.) this season.

Jared Toney
Position: Running Back
School: Alcoa (Alcoa, Tenn.)
What: With 35 touchdowns in 10 games for the unbeaten Tornadoes, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior is threatening the single-season state record.
Record: 48, set by Kelcey Williams of Humboldt in 1995 and Ralph King of Murfreesboro Riverdale in 2000.
Notable: Earlier in the season, Toney scored six touchdowns in a 41-24 victory over Maryville.

Kyle Smith
Position: Quarterback
School: Lancaster Catholic (Lancaster, Pa.)
What: Broke the state record for career touchdown passes after throwing five in a 49-7 win over Annville-Cleona (Annville, Pa.) last weekend. Smith's career total is now 99.
Old Record: 94, set between 2003-05 by Pat Bostick of Manheim Township (Manheim, Pa.).
Notable: Last season, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Smith passed for 43 touchdowns and 3,192 yards.

Scotty Young
Position: Quarterback
School: Ryan (Denton, Texas)
What: With 39 touchdown passes in nine games, Young could threaten the state standard for TD passes in a season.
Record: 67, set in 2003 by Graham Harrell of Ennis.
Notable: Young, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior, passed for a state-best 65 touchdowns as a first-year starter in 2008. He's bound for Texas Tech, where Harrell also played.
