Swine flu fears lead to closing of VivaAerobus in Austin.

Citing declining revenues and passengers after news of the swine flu spread, discount air carrier VivaAerobus will announce Friday it will stop its flights from Austin to Mexico at the end of May.

Austin Airport Spokesman Jim Halbrook confirmed the closing Friday, saying the airline had a 50 percent cancellation rate after the news of the swine flu's effects in Mexico. He also said 30 percent of passengers did not show up for their flights.

The airline started flying exclusively out of Austin's South Terminal in 2008.

Bergstrom's South Terminal is advertised as the first facility at a United States airport devoted exclusively to low-cost airlines. The South Terminal is a private venture developed by GE Commercial Aviation Services, in partnership with ABIA and the City of Austin.

VivaAerobus' Web site is advertising cheap fares from Austin through the end of May. Fares are not available beyond then.
