Regionals it is for the Gregory-Portland and Ray tennis teams.
The Wildcats (11-3 overall) posted their fourth consecutive district championship in team tennis this season, as G-P rolled through District 30-4A play with a 6-0 district mark. The Texans (8-5 overall) placed second in the district again this year (with a 5-1 district record) to qualify for regionals for the second straight season.
There is no 30-4A tennis tournament this season, which means G-P and Ray advance after finishing first and second respectively in 30-4A this season.
The Wildcats and Texans now turn their attention to the Region IV-4A tennis tournament Oct. 30-31 in San Antonio, which features state-ranked No. 3 Boerne, No. 6 San Antonio Alamo Heights and No. 8 Austin Lake Travis.
G-P features five seniors this season, including Ashley Beyer, Jennifer Johnston, Sara Medders, Wilson Macha and Lauren Quisenberry.
“Everybody’s very elated — that’s four years straight without losing a district match,” Wildcats coach Carl Prewit said of his team. “More than that though, we want to perform better at the regional tournament than we have in the past and so we’re gearing up for that.”
Ray, meanwhile, has won 10 of its past 12 district matches dating to last season with the lone district losses coming to G-P.
“It is even more special (to qualify for regionals this season), especially since so many of our kids are seniors,” said Texans coach Cynthia Schulze, whose team moved from Class 5A to Class 4A before last season. “We always used to get third when we were playing in Class 5A, so we’re pretty excited about getting second. It means a lot to us.”
The seven seniors on Ray’s tennis team include Jordan Comstock, Bianca Flores, Sarah Fox, Meredith Hilliard, Mariah Mauck, Daniel Olvera and Clay Reuter.
