The crowd was definitely not on its side, but the Canyon softball team took matters into their own hands in the Class 4A area playoffs against Marble Falls on Thursday.

Meagan McKinney crushed a two-run home run over the left-center field wall to give the Cougarettes just enough of a cushion in a 3-0 victory at Lake Travis High School.

Junior infielder Becca Wall used her speed and solid instincts on the bases to break a scoreless tie in the third inning.

Wall turned a routine base hit into left into a triple by keeping her eye on the ball and watched a pair of mishaps by the Marble Falls outfield that allowed her to make a trek for third, where she scored on a wild pitch moments later.

“I really wanted to come out and have a good game tonight,” said Wall. “I was excited to see that we did the little things to get a win for us tonight.”

Wall went 2-for-2 with two runs in the win.

Canyon will now play the winner of the San Antonio Burbank/Lampasas matchup next week.

BASEBALL: Canyon 8, Brackenridge 3

SAN ANTONIO — Tyler Figol went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs and Jacob Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lift Canyon to an 8-3 win over San Antonio Brackenridge in the Class 4A bi-district showdown at SAISD Sports Complex on Thursday.

The Cougars will now face the winner of the Lake Travis/Austin Lanier series next week.

Canyon proved it has the heart to rally when it matters most.

Down 3-1 in the fourth, the Cougars finally put together some hits to tie the game and Figol hit a three-run double with the bases loaded to put the game out of reach.

“I’m really proud of how hard this team played tonight,” said Canyon coach Brian Martinez. “I think that all those close games we played in district really prepared us for the playoffs. We rallied and took the wind out of their sails tonight, which was good to see.

“We never got down on ourselves and we did a good job of putting the previous inning behind us and stayed focus. ”

Tony Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win.
