If it weren't for those two-time defending champions in Lake Travis, Killeen might be the top contender for the District 25-4A championship.
And if weren't for a certain dynamic duo on the Lake Travis offense, Michael Cummings would have the look of a frontrunner for the All-Central Texas MVP award.
Cummings accounted for four touchdowns as Killeen rolled to a 45-7 homecoming win over Marble Falls. The victory moves Killeen to 2-1 in district play, with their lone blemish a 56-31 loss to Lake Travis on Sept. 25.
"It was a big win," said Killeen senior wide receiver Ja'corie Baker, whose Kangaroos lost 71-9 to Lake Travis in the state quarterfinals last year. "We will play Lake Travis in the quarterfinals, we will beat them."
Marble Falls opened the game with a bang, blocking a punt and scoring on its first offensive play to take a 7-0 lead with 8:16 left in the first quarter.
But Killeen wasn't down long, responding with a 13-play drive to tie the game. The Kangaroos hopped onto the scoreboard when Cummings ran in the ball on a fourth-and-goal from the 3.
Killeen blew the game open in the second quarter with 21 points, the fourth time in the last five games that Killeen has scored at least 19 points in a single quarter.
Cummings fueled the scoring outburst with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Da'Juan Sylvester and a nine-yard touchdown run just before halftime.
"We kind of started off bad but the second quarter we got in the mode," Killeen running back Jaquail Haskins said. "We picked it up." Cummings, who was pulled with more than two minutes left in the third quarter, ran for three touchdowns, passed for another and finished with 194 yards of total offense.
This season, Cummings has had his hand in 27 touchdowns.
"Mike is a good player, man," Baker said. "He's a real talented player and I'm lucky to have him as my quarterback."
In addition to Cummings, Killeen got offensive production from Haskins, who rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Sylvester, who had 88 yards on three catches.
Not to be outdone by its offense, the Killeen defense also made a statement on Friday night. A week after allowing 42 points to Dripping Springs, the Kangaroos forced four Marble Falls turnovers. Marble Falls has seven plays result in negative yardage.
"Our defense, they amazed me," Haskins said. "As you can see, the score tells it all."
Zed Woerner threw for 87 yards and a touchdown to lead Marble Falls. The sophomore quarterback also threw two interceptions. Marble Falls (4-2; 1-1 District 25-4A) will try to regroup next week against Hutto. Killeen (5-2) will have a bye week to prepare for its Sept. 23 matchup with the Hippos.
