Taylor’s Pop Warner played in front of a home crowd for the first time this season. The flag team, led by coaches Matt Whisenant, Lenerick Mitchell and Justin Newsom lost 32-20 to Lake Travis. The team is now 1-1-1 on the season.
The Jr. Pee Wee team, led by coaches Eddy Martinez, B.K. Hines and Curtis Fields, lost to Northeast Austin 26-7.
The Pee Wee team, who entered its first game as a division one squad, beat Pflugerville 19-7. The Ducks have now outscored their opponents 119-7 this season, and are now 4-0. The team they beat from Pflugerville was new to division one as well after starting 3-0 and outscoring opponents 87-0 before falling to Taylor.
“Our kids put up a great effort in each game,” TPA president Shorty Mitchell said. “Our defense, led by Raymond Hernandez, did an excellent job.”
Other coaches contributing to the Pee Wee team are Berry Tealer, Lloyd Reynolds and Mark Jackson Sr.
Mitchell said his players enjoyed playing in front of a monster home crowd, which grew to over 600 people throughout the day. Even Taylor High School athletic director Rick Cobia came out to show support.
“[Rick] Cobia has been a supporter of our program since he became head coach and athletic director in this town,” Mitchell said. “It was great to have him out, and it shows a lot about him as a person and coach to support us as much as he does.”
Mitchell wanted to give a special thanks to the team moms that help on the sideline and in preparation for the games. For the flag team, Lisa Whisenant and Gracie Garza perform the duties. For the Jr. Pee Wee team, Haylee Martinez and Tiffany Lewis are team moms, and for the Pee Wee group, the title goes to Tina Kearley.
The Taylor Pop Warner teams play at home again Saturday. The Flag team gets the triple-header started with a game against another Lake Travis team at 10 a.m. The Jr. Pee Wee team searches for its first win against Lake Travis, and the Pee Wee team tries to stay perfect following the Jr. Pee Wee game against Northwest Austin.
