Boerne High School football coach Dane Johnson was pleased after Friday’s game between his Greyhounds and Lake Travis despite the fact the scoreboard read 52-0 in favor of the Cavaliers.

Johnson looks at Friday’s contest as an investment into his program’s future. He said there were so many positives to be gained by playing against the Cavs, the two-time defending 4A state champs.

“I love playing teams like that, I wouldn’t want to play every game against a team like that, but I want one like that every year, it’s a great measuring stick. We get to see what we’re doing and where we need to go,” he said. “That’s why I came to Boerne because I want to build a program and tradition like that. They didn’t start out that way, so they proved that it can be done. If we can play smart and play together and get a little tougher, we’re headed in the right direction.”

Lake Travis was an offensive machine, at least early on. The Cavs scored three touchdowns in the first five minutes of the game on drives of three, two and two plays that used all of 1:33 off the clock.

Lake Travis added a defensive touchdown when Ethan Willinger scooped up a fumble at the Greyhound five-yard line and ran it in to make it 28-0 at the 6:11 mark of the first.

At that point, the Cavs were on pace for 56 points per quarter or 224 in the game, but they called off the dogs against the Hounds. After going up 35-0 to end the first, they only scored 17 points over the last three quarters. They also took numerous delay of game penalties and after a while they didn’t rush or set up a return on BHS punts.

Johnson said he appreciates the way the Cavs treated the game.

“They’ve been classy all the way through, it was unfortunate why they had to play this game, but it was a blessing for us, it was a win-win all the way through,” he said. “They’re very classy, you can see why they’re so successful.”

Lake Travis was supposed to play a team from Louisiana, but the trip was canceled. The Cavs needed a game and so did the Hounds so they agreed to meet.

Johnson said there are no regrets in hosting the contest.

“I’m not apologizing for scheduling this game, I’d do it every year,” he said. “We need to learn from this - the speed of the game, the physicalness of it and see if we can improve.”

Boerne had 12 possessions in the game and punted 10 times, lost a fumble and gave the ball over on loss of downs. The Hounds were never able to make it into Lake Travis territory although they did have the ball at the 50-yard line late in the fourth. BHS finished with 63 passing yards and four rushing yards.

Wil Amick had six rushes, Jacob Hoffman and Alex Perez each had three yards rushing, while Zack Garcia had three carries.

Amick completed eight passes for 38 yards, while Perez had a 25-yard completion to Matt Bass. Hoffman had two catches for 13 yards, Brucks Alden had one grab for two yards, Nolan Campbell made two catches for 10 yards, Conley Chilek hauled in one pass for six yards, while Colton Griffith made two catches for seven yards.

The Hounds will play Friday at Rouse with 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
