Killeen led Pflugerville Connally nearly 32 minutes Friday, including the seven seconds after quarterback Michael Cummings completed the go-ahead 34-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Corie Baker to lift the Roos over the Cougars 39-38 in their final nondistrict game.
The Roos, who host two-time defending Class 4A state champion Lake Travis on Friday, had 444 yards against Connally, including 418 by junior quarter back Michael Cummings, who ran for four touchdowns and threw two.
Meanwhile, Gatesville, like Killeen, put together a game-winning drive to end its back-and-forth affair with Lampasas 49-48.
Gatesville and Lampasas combined for 20 total offensive possessions Friday night at Badger Field.
Of those, 14 ended in touchdowns.
It was that kind of night.
Gatesville came away with the 49-48 victory, scoring with 23 seconds left in the game and converting the ensuing 2-point conversion for the win. But with all the offense (983 total yards combined), the two defenses not only took a backseat Friday but will most likely be an area that gets extra attention this week. Lampasas gets a break this week before starting District 25-4A play, while Gatesville plays Waco Connally at home Friday.
"There's going to be times when we get held to seven as long as the defense holds them to six," Gatesville coach Kyle Cooper said. "That's what happened tonight. We got plenty to work on with both sides of the football and we'll go back to work."
The Hornets, despite their multiple-look offense, were in a pass-first mode with their tall wide receivers against the shorter Lampasas secondary. Quarterback Jake Truss completed 21-of-28 passes for 338 yards and six touchdowns. His top target, the 6-foot-4 Ross Wallace, made 12 catches for 221 yards and hauled in the game-winning, 2-point conversion.
"I was hoping we could get a stop every time, especially on this last time," Lampasas coach Joey McQueen said. "What we did – we scored too early on that last drive."
Lampasas, and its slot-T offense, was just as successful, wearing out a Gatesville defense for 515 yards rushing on 63 carries. Edward Hall had a team-high 234 yards and four touchdowns, while Brode Dubose scored twice and ran for 159 yards.
By the Numbers
124 – The number of rushing yards Cummings had Friday night for the first 100-yard game by a Killeen back this season.
7 – Vincent Fuller's 26-yard touchdown reception with 9:32 to play in the second quarter of the Grey Wolves' 27-13 loss to Austin LBJ Thursday night were the first first-half points put up by the Grey Wolves this season. They've been outscored 28-0 in the first quarter and 49-7 in the first half by their opponents.
6 – The number of touchdowns combined by both Gatesville and Lampasas that covered at least 25 yards. The longest score went to Lampasas' Aaron Reyna, who took a pitch for 75 yards. The Badgers also had scoring runs of 40 and 53 yards, while Gatesville's big plays were scoring passes of 30, 34 and 35 yards.
983 – The total yards combined by Gatesville and Lampasas in the Hornets' 49-48 win. Gatesville finished with 441 yards of offense, including 338 yards through the air. Lampasas ran for 515 yards while adding 27 yards passing on Colton Perkins' first completion this season.
Fast Forward
The Roos host Lake Travis, which should take over the top spot in the Class 4A poll today following No. 1 Longview's loss, Friday night in the District 25-4A opener for both teams. The Cavaliers (3-0) out scored the Roos 121-18 last year, including 50-9 in their district-opener last September.
Even without Garrett Gilbert (Texas) the Cavaliers are still the same high-scoring offense (51 point per game) with Michael Brewer running the show. Led by Cummings' passing, which is in stark contrast to the last time the two teams played, the Roos are averaging 32 points a game behind 200 passing yards a game, compared to last season's 335 rushing average.
"We're in the toughest 4A district in Texas and we've got the No. 1 team in the state of Texas coming in next week, but, you know, we're no slouch either," said Killeen High coach Sam Jones.
Meanwhile, Shoemaker's hopes to get on the winning track may hinge on starting quarterback Jameill Showers' follow-up appointment to see if the broken collarbone he suffered in a Week Zero scrimmage has healed enough for him to return in time for the Grey Wolves' District 12-5A opener at 0-3 Bryan on Friday night. The Vikings rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit to beat the Grey Wolves 42-41 in overtime after Shoemaker failed to convert a game-winning 2-point conversion.
The action gets under way Thursday when Copperas Cove and Ellison come off their bye weeks and head into District 12-5A play.
It's the first of three Thursday district games for the Dawgs, with all three on the road at Leo Buckley Stadium against the three 5A Killeen schools. Two of Cove's final three 12-5A games are those Thursday contests against Shoemaker (Oct. 22) and Harker Heights (Nov. 5). Cove swept the three Killeen schools last season, outscoring Ellison, Shoemaker and Harker Heights 114-20 in games played at Bulldawg Stadium.
