BHS coach Dane JohnsonBoerne High School had a rough outing last week against Sonora, falling 49-7 to the 2A Broncos, but things will get a whole lot rougher this Friday when they host Lake Travis, the two-time defending 4A state champions.

Boerne High School football coach Dane Johnson said his team knows they’ll have their hands full, but are looking forward to the challenge.

“These guys are good, very good, but we’re fired up,” Johnson said. “This is a great opportunity to compete against them and make good things happen.”

Johnson said he hasn’t really had to say much to the team about the Cavaliers.

“There’s no secrets, they know who they’re going up against,” he said. “I want them to go out there and compete, pick a fight, not literally, but we want to say ‘we’re here to play, we’re not going to be in awe, we’re going to give you all we’ve got.’”

As Johnson helps to build the Boerne program he said he wants the team to get better with each passing game. BHS lost their first two games 35-14, but Johnson said he saw improvement between the two games. Boerne’s first year coach added that his team didn’t improve last week against the Broncos the way he wanted.

“Last week was a severe disappointment, I don’t know if it was the trip or the rain, but we took a big step back, we didn’t play very well,” he said. “We had a bad week of work, they say you play like you practice and we didn’t practice very well.”

Johnson hopes being at home for the first time this year will help. All three games so far this season have been roughly two-hour drives and Johnson said his team is ready to play before a home crowd.

“We only have one more road game so it will be nice to be home,” he said. “Everybody seems to play better at home.”

Johnson said he’s not worried about the score of Friday's game and wants to see his team give a championship effort and walk off the field with their heads high.

“We’re focused on us and trying to get better. We’re tying to build the foundation,” he said. “I hope we can play the best we’ve ever played, we have to step up our game. I just want us to go out there and compete.”
