The boat ramp at the Mansfield Dam on Lake Travis is a narrow one.
“My wife didn’t think it was gonna work,” said boater Zack Meyer.
The LCRA recently expanded one side of the ramp. Meyer and his family tried it out on Monday, figuring it was better than the alternative.
“Lake Austin will probably be crazy,” admitted Meyer.
With the Central Texas drought now in its second year, Lake Travis is far below its normal level.
“We haven’t been out here I don’t think once this year. I didn’t want to come out (for Labor Day). I didn’t think we would have enough water space to actually ski,” said Meyer’s wife, Misty Meyer.
Still, the Meyers' boat went in easy and in minutes the shore was far behind. The Meyers joined others on the lake looking to soak in Labor Day.
“I usually come out at least once a week,” said diver John Knutson.
With Lake Travis down about 34 feet it; divers like Knutson are getting into the water, searching for remnants of Lake Travis.
His goal Monday? The Shaker Plant. It once stood where ‘The Sometimes Islands’ now sits.
Knutson wants to find the pillars, wooden frames and ramps that made up the plant. It was used in the 1930’s to provide material to help build Mansfield Dam. What's left is usually lost in the depths of Lake Travis. Now that levels are down, parts of the plant are coming back into sight.
“It’s a little eerie at first because you know people used to work on it, but it’s really neat,” said diver Ellen Giddens.
Giddens took to the water with a group of divers on Labor Day. They explored around Sometimes Island near Mansfield Dam.
“You kind of get addicted to it, and it’s a lot of fun,” said diver, Jim Baber.
It's a part of Lake Travis coming back to life; when some feared recreation was fading.
