Katy Football

With Week Zero in the books, and Week 1 (or is it Week 2??) upon us, the new Associated Press high school football polls have taken on a bit different look after a few upsets that occurred last weekend.

There weren't any big changes in Class 5A, where Katy remained the top dogs. Cedar Hill moved up a spot to No. 2 after its nationally televised comeback thriller against DeSoto. Southlake Carroll moved up a couple of spots to No. 5 after its dismantling of top recruit Jackson Jeffcoat and Plano West.

The lone loser in area 5A big dogs was Allen, which just as I predicted, fell to Class 4A No. 1 Longview in an epic battle. The Eagles dropped from No. 2 to No. 9 in the 5A poll. Hebron cracked the "others receiving votes" after dismantling Wylie, in a game which the Pirates were favored by many.

In Class 4A, Longview kept a firm stranglehold on its No. 1 spot, and pulled in some more first-place votes in the process by beating Allen. Somehow -- and don't ask me how because I don't know -- Longview didn't get all the first-place votes as Lake Travis still got two after beating some spare Austin school. Those voters should lose their credentials as far as I'm concerned.

Area upstart Denton Guyer fell from a tie for second with Lake Travis to alone at No. 3 after struggling late with Carrollton Newman Smith, and will get Stephenville on Friday after the Yellowjackets were an ill-timed fumble away from knocking off No. 8 Aledo in the season-opener.

Highland Park moved up one spot to No. 5 after beating Red Oak, and Ennis climbed into the poll checking in at No. 9 after demolishing poor Crosby as quarterback D.J. Betik accounted for seven touchdowns in the first half.
