Lake Travis will start the season chasing the team it beat to end last season.

The Cavaliers came in second in the Associated Press’ preseason football poll, which was released today. Lake Travis received five of the 25 first-place votes while Longview had 17. Lake Travis beat Longview 48-23 in the Class 4A, Division I championship last December.

The Cavaliers, who were ranked No. 2 in the American-Statesman’s preseason power poll for the Central Texas area, will be replacing some key players this season while Longview returns most of its offensive firepower.

Also ranked in the AP poll were Giddings and Wimberley, which were respectively ranked fifth and eighth in the Class 3A poll. Just missing the cut was Class 5A Stony Point and Class 3A Liberty Hill, both of which were ranked 12th in their respective classes.

The poll was comprised with the votes of 25 high school football writers from across the state. Rick Cantu is the American-Statesman’s representative.
