Katy, Allen top Texas 5A preseason football poll

The defending Class 5A state champions are as close as can be in The Associated Press preseason high school football poll. Katy got the nod at No. 1 by just one point over Allen in the poll released Thursday. Katy, which won its second straight 5A Division II title last year, received 14 first-place votes and 230 points. Allen, last year's Division I champion, had eight first-place votes and 229 points. Longview was the top pick in Class 4A by a comfortable margin over Lake Travis, the team it lost to in last year's 4A Division I title game. The other No. 1 teams are Gilmer in Class 3A, Daingerfield in 2A and Cayuga in Class 1A. The poll is voted on by 25 media members who cover Texas high school football.
