The first strong cold front of the fall is expected to push through the Austin area early Friday, Oct. 16, and boaters on Lake Travis should plan for rough conditions. According to the Statesman's newsroom meteorologist, the front should reach Austin around 2 a.m., with scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms possible as it passes. Severe storms are not expected.

The bigger concern is wind. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Central Texas from Friday morning into the evening, with sustained north winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts that could approach 45 mph. Winds are expected to stay gusty Saturday before easing Sunday.

Strong winds and dry air also raise the fire danger, so outdoor burning should be avoided Friday. Anyone with plans on the water should expect choppy conditions, secure boats and docks, and tie down loose items such as outdoor Halloween decorations.
