Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall Tuesday afternoon near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, close to the Texas line, with sustained winds around 60 mph. Hours later the National Hurricane Center downgraded it to a tropical depression as the center moved inland over southeast Texas, passing near Beaumont. Wind gusts were reported as high as 71 mph at Texas Point. Coastal tropical storm warnings have been dropped, but gusty winds lingered near the center overnight.
The bigger leftover threat is rain. Forecasters expected 3 to 7 inches from the upper Texas coast into east-central Texas, with isolated totals of 9 to 15 inches and flash flooding possible, especially in urban areas. Tens of thousands of customers lost power — more than 30,000 in Jefferson County alone, and reports statewide of 70,000 or more. Beaumont saw downed trees, dark traffic signals, and flooded underpasses. The system was expected to keep weakening as it moved northwest over eastern Texas and then dissipate.
