A petition to ban personal watercraft on Lake Austin is gaining traction after Christy Spencer said a jet ski crashed into her children’s float and then her boat. The kids were thrown off the tube but were unharmed; Spencer said the close call could have been far worse. She and other lake users have noticed growing congestion from boats and jet skis in recent years. The petition asks for a year-round ban on personal watercraft, or at least a weekend ban during the busiest months, plus a review of enforcement on the lake.
City Council Member Vanessa Fuentes has acknowledged the concerns, saying she supports evaluating safety risks, existing rules, and enforcement so residents and visitors can feel safer on the water. Austin Police typically have one patrol boat on Lake Austin on weekends, with Texas Game Wardens sometimes helping on holiday weekends and during summer. No policy change has been made yet; the effort remains a petition intended to spark more discussion about lake safety.
