Mount Bonnell, one of Austin’s oldest tourist attractions dating back to the mid-1800s, is a limestone overlook rising more than 780 feet above sea level in Covert Park. Visitors climb over 100 steps to reach the summit, where they enjoy panoramic views of Lake Austin, the Colorado River, and the surrounding hills. Popular for sunrises, sunsets, and midday picnics, the site offers a natural escape from the city’s busier streets and is only about a 15-minute drive northwest of downtown.

The free park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a shaded but steep trail that provides a moderate workout. A pavilion and picnic areas at the top offer places to rest, and the location makes it easy to combine with nearby spots like La La Land café, Draught House Pub & Brewery, or Snooze. Early morning or evening visits are especially recommended during Austin’s hotter months.
