August forecast released for Central Texas

Central Texas is entering August after a wetter-than-normal July. While the wet soils can help temper extreme heat by using some of the sun’s energy for evaporation, higher humidity levels may offset some of that benefit. August, the final month of meteorological summer, is expected to be the hottest of the season. The Climate Prediction Center’s outlook leans toward warmer-than-normal temperatures in an already typically hot month, along with drier-than-normal rainfall.
A normal August in the region features average highs in the high 90s, lows in the mid-70s, about 13 triple-digit days, and less than 3 inches of rain. Through the end of July, Austin’s Camp Mabry had recorded only four 100-degree days (with one more expected), well behind the typical pace of 13 by this point in the summer. Recent years have varied widely in early triple-digit counts, and 2025 finished with just 22 for the full year versus a normal of 29. Wetter conditions earlier in the season can meaningfully reduce the number of extreme heat days by limiting how much the ground and air heat up during the day.
