Heat dome brings hottest week yet in Austin in Central Texas

A sprawling heat dome of high pressure is settling over Texas this week, delivering the hottest stretch of the year so far with triple-digit temperatures across much of the state, including Austin. The subtropical high acts like a lid, causing sinking air to compress and warm while suppressing clouds for mostly sunny skies that allow heat to build day after day. Highs may challenge records in West Texas and the Panhandle—such as El Paso’s 105° and Amarillo’s 102°—while Austin’s forecast near 100° stays safely below its daily record of 105°.

The intense heat is expected to persist through the workweek, with temperatures climbing into the triple digits Thursday and Friday and prompting elevated National Weather Service heat-risk levels that could reach major by Friday. Relief should arrive by the weekend as the high pressure shifts westward toward the Four Corners region, easing temperatures closer to seasonal norms and potentially allowing a few isolated showers or thunderstorms to return.
