Trinity aquifer visible in Texas cave after heavy rains

Heavy rains across Central Texas and the Hill Country have flooded rivers and creeks, filling the Highland Lakes and cave systems that feed local aquifers. At Natural Bridge Caverns near San Antonio, lower chambers are now underwater as the Trinity Aquifer recharges—a rare and striking sight. Visitors described water flowing into the caves as wild, while experts noted that flooding along Cibolo Creek raised nearby well levels by about 40 feet.

The Edwards Aquifer, which supplies Barton, San Marcos, and Comal Springs, has also seen some improvement, though it remains 30–40% below healthy levels. Scientists emphasize that more rain is still needed to fully replenish the region’s water sources. Central Texas relies on both aquifers and lakes, with Austin drawing mainly from the Colorado River and Highland Lakes, while surrounding communities depend heavily on the Edwards and Trinity aquifers.
