Hundreds of homes damaged by Texas floods as concerns remain downstream

Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged by last week's floods in the Texas Hill Country. Governor Greg Abbott reported that nearly 600 homes and 100 businesses were damaged or destroyed across Kerr, Kendall, and Comal counties, with Kerr County bearing the brunt at nearly 500 affected homes. The flooding claimed two lives, and first responders rescued at least 530 people statewide. While recovery efforts are shifting into gear in the affected areas, officials emphasized that the danger is far from over.
Floodwaters continue moving downstream through the Highland Lakes system, with dams releasing water and Austin maintaining a waterway ban through Tuesday afternoon. Gov. Abbott warned that communities further downstream, including Carrizo Springs and Cotulla, remain at risk as waters rise. A developing tropical system in the Gulf could bring additional heavy rain to already saturated regions later this week. Officials credited improved warning systems for mitigating worse outcomes compared to last year's floods, while urging the public to stay out of waterways.
