Memorial Day weekend drew large crowds to Lake Travis as Central Texas lakes reached much healthier levels than the previous year. According to the Lower Colorado River Authority, combined storage in Lakes Buchanan and Travis currently stands at about 86% capacity, compared to just 47% at this time last year. Lake levels have rebounded significantly due to heavy rainfall last July and additional rains in April and May, with Lake Buchanan rising from 998 feet to 1,019 feet and Lake Travis climbing from 635 feet to 665 feet over the past year.

While the higher water levels have improved conditions for boating, swimming, and recreation, officials are urging caution. Texas Game Wardens note that increased runoff can bring floating debris, submerged hazards, and rapidly changing conditions. They recommend wearing life jackets, designating a sober operator, monitoring the weather, and staying vigilant on the water as patrols increase over the holiday weekend. Despite not being at full capacity, LCRA officials describe water storage as being in “excellent shape” heading into summer.
