Police have identified the woman who drowned in Lake Austin on Monday near Mary Quinlan Park as Lucia Rodriguez, 33.

Rodriguez is an Austin-area dancer who performed seven seasons with Ballet East Dance Theatre.

Friends of Rodriguez today called her a compassionate individual who, along with her passion for dance, cared about working with children.

Rodriguez had a “deep sense of the need to nurture others and care for family in a powerful way,” said Russ Smith, an Austin photographer and friend of Rodriguez.

Austin Police Department and Austin Fire Department divers recovered Rodriguez’s body Monday, after responding to reports of a submerged car in the lake around 6:38 a.m.

They pulled the empty vehicle out of the water, said Austin Police Sgt. Richard Stresing. Divers later found Rodriguez’s body near the place where the car was submerged, Stresing said.

Police think Rodriguez may have driven into the water because she was unaware that South Quinlan Park road dead ends into a Lake Austin boat ramp, Stresing said. The incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
